On November 6, 2024, Purposed Hope Foundation made its first an outreach to Kirabo Children’s Center, a humble community school tucked away in Kikandwa, Luwero District. This visit was more than just delivering supplies, it was about connecting with a community that has been doing so much with so little and finding ways to support their efforts to build a better future for their children.
Kirabo Children’s Center, started over 15 years ago, has educated more than 500 pupils over the years. Today, the school supports 96 pupils, with a big heart but limited resources. The challenges it faces are immense, from soggy grounds that flood when it rains to the lack of basic necessities like a water tank and proper latrines. What’s more, many of the children come from families who cannot afford the modest school fees of 100,000 UGX (about $28) per term. Despite this, the school keeps its doors open, offering hope to children who might otherwise have no place to learn.
When we visited the school, we went with a simple goal: to make a difference, however small, and listen to the community to understand their needs.
Here’s what we did:
- Shared a Meal
We brought 100 kilograms of beans, 300 kilograms of posho (maize flour), and other essentials to ensure the children had a hearty meal. Sharing lunch with them reminded us of the simple joys that unite us all.
- Provided Essentials
Shoes, sweets, and scholastic materials were some of the items we delivered to the children. – Supported Education
Our co-founder, Kalaki Brian, sponsored thirty students. This financial help will ease their burden and keep them in school.
Beyond the items, we spent time speaking with the headteacher, Ms. Sarah Ssegane, who shared the uphill battle she faces running the school.
From our conversations, it’s clear that Kirabo Children’s Center needs more support to keep thriving:
- Flooded Grounds
The school’s compound gets waterlogged whenever it rains, making it difficult for the children to play or move around.
- No Water Tank
Without a tank to collect rainwater, children walk long distances to fetch water, even during class hours, putting their safety at risk.
- Broken Latrines
The school’s pit latrines are not in the best usable condition, creating sanitation and hygiene challenges for the pupils and teachers.
- Limited Financial Support
Over 60% of the children’s families cannot afford the school fees, which hinders the school’s ability to operate smoothly.
- Parent Engagement
Many parents in the community don’t fully understand the importance of education, making it hard for them to prioritize their children’s schooling.
At Purposed Hope Foundation, we’re committed to being part of the solution. Based on what we learned, here’s what we aim to do:
- Raise Funds for Infrastructure
We want to help the school get a water tank, improve drainage, and rebuild proper latrines. – Sponsor More Children
Sponsorships will not only keep children in school but also help the school manage its expenses better.
- Engage Parents
Later this month, we plan to meet with parents to encourage them to value education and discuss ways to boost their livelihoods, such as starting savings groups and small businesses.
- Empower the Community
We hope to provide skills training for parents, creating a ripple effect of positive change for their families.
During our visit, we saw firsthand the smiles and joy of the children. Despite the challenges, they were full of hope, reminding us why we do what we do. But there’s so much more that needs to be done, not just for Kirabo Children’s Center but for other communities like it across Uganda.
Education is more than just classrooms and books, it’s a path to a brighter future. By supporting schools like Kirabo, we can give children the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty and dream bigger.
Here’s how you can be part of this journey:
- Sponsor a Child
For as little as $28 per term, you can keep a child in school and give them a shot at a better life.
- Support Our Projects
Help us raise funds for critical infrastructure like water tanks, better latrines, and classroom improvements.
- Volunteer Your Time
Share your skills or join us on our next outreach to make a hands-on difference.
Every little bit counts. Together, we can make sure no child is left behind.
